Description
The ruins of a castle belonging to the ancient fort, survey from the top the valleys of Enza and Secchia rivers.
The toponym "Castrum Novum" was coined to differentiate it from "Castrum Vetus", situated on the Pietra Bismantova.
The Canossa are reputed as the purchasers of the fortified complex erected from 1062 to 1110. The following year Matilde assigns the "Castrum Novum" to the monastery of Canossa and it remained an ecclesiastic possession until 1156.
In 1297 Bernardino Fogliani and Rolondini Canossa occupied Castelnovo and the fort.
Ettore da Panico, nominated Podestà at Castelnovo, was ordered to demolish the entire fortified complex, including the walls.
In 1413 the Canossa undertook the construction of a new castle of which, the following year, they obtained the investiture by Marquis Nicolò III d'Este.
In 1415 the Estensi took possession of "Castrum Novum" and transformed it in1521 into the seat of the podesteria.
Of this ancient construction currently there are edges of the walled curtain and the masonry of the pillared tower left, which rises a few meters from the country plain. The square-planned tower has a surface made of finished sandstone ashlars while the structures located on the southern tip of this "trincerato field" are difficult to interpret and perhaps belong to a cistern.
