Periods of Activity:

The higher part of the path has difficult stretches in winter, with snow and ice. We advise it be done in summer, for the fresh climate and for the variety and intensity of colors in autumn and spring.

The Spallanzani path, dedicated to the scientist Lazzaro Spallanzani, passes through all the vegetation strips of the Reggiano Apennines (hills, mountains and peaks), from Scandiano up to S. Pellegrino in Alpe, on the Reggiano ridge.
The path, besides being marked by white and red CAI signs also has a butterfly symbol and the initials SSP.
The path does not have particular technical difficulties, it can also be used by inexperienced excursionists and is quite suitable for horse trekking.
The path is 115 km long, is usually traveled in stages an, usually 7, for a total of 35 hours walking time.

Route:

From Reggio Emilia you take the SS 63 up to the intersection for Casina where you continue on the SP 63 for S. Giovani di Querciola. After 2 km you take the intersection for Giandeto - Croveglia, then, after 3 km, you get to the center of the town.

Itinerary in detail
Third stage. Locations crossed: Giandeto, Stopeda, Croveglia, Buramedia, Cerpiano, Mulino del Noce, Mandra, Ca' Vizei, Romagnano, Pianzano, Ibatica, Ca' Spadaccini, S. Vitale, Castello delle Carpinete, Carpineti. Time needed: 4.30 hrs
Difference in altitude climbing: 750 m
Difference in altitude descending: 790 m Soon after Giandeto you climb along a carriage-way which turns right and descends to the village of Croveglia, very interesting for its two tower houses of the XV century. Still traveling on agricultural roads you reach Cerpiano where you encounter the paved road which takes you downhill for 400m. Reaching the provincial road you take it on the right for 150m; on the left on the curve there's a path which climbs and reaches the hamlet of Mandra. Having passed it you take a mule-track on the right which climbs to Mt. Uccellara and then descends to Romagnano, one of the best kept hamlets of the entire Reggiano Apennines. The itinerary now goes along a paved road. Reaching the main road at Cà Spadaccini you travel another 200m westward and then take a path on the left which leads to the S. Vitale Parish. The trail then runs on the ridge of Mt. Valestra, Mt. Fosola of great geological and botanical interest. You get a wide view of the Secchia valley. Through a rich underbrush you descend a steep slope in chestnut woods, slightly descending and reach the Carpineti castle (805m) where you intersect the road which leads to the town. From the castle you descend along a paved road to the town of Carpineti, where you can sleep in one the hotels in the center.
