Description
Cecciola, antique domain of the Vallisneri, was connected to the parmesan area through a mule road, in part paved, which led to Vairo going beyond the Enza river on an antique arch bridge, now destroyed.
Local tradition maintains that this bridge was built by Matilde di Canossa to connect the two shores of the Enza river.
Cecciola is one of he most interesting hamlets of the Reggiano mountains, it retains a very intricate historical center with numerous arch underpasses, courts and open galleries, all connected by a thick network of small clustered alleys which give way to portals, windows and tabernacles.
The urbanistic plan is undifferentiated, with strictly adjoining volumes to avoid exposition to the wind.
In the hamlet there are still ancient buildings which show signs of originality of Reggiano Apennine architecture such as he square plan with vast area divided on two floors, the cover being in stone slabs with few windows, squared in finely pebbled sandstone.
The small church dedicated to Maria Assunta shows on its façade a praiseworthy stone portal sculpted and dated "1885".
In the town you can see numerous portals of different shapes: the most antique that was found up to now is of 1592.
There are numerous marble majesties which stand out from the walls of the dwellings and depict different saints, generally sculpted in relief; at times a small aedicula or pillar enclose sacred images of bigger dimensions and are often well crafted.
