Description:
The chapel of Quara is one of those that Marquee Bonifacio obtained in emphyteusis from the church of Reggio Emilia in 1070. It was a daughter-house of the Toano Parish according to a document of 1205 and in the Register of Tithes of 1302 and 1318. In the XVI century, the church, situated in a place called "Old Church" was almost in ruins and later on was dilapidated by a landslide. In 1605 it was substituted with the enlargement of a chapel of the feudal vassal Conti Sassi. In 1608 the building underwent modifications and in 1618 you could see the church eight arms away from the feudal palace, with an eye on the door and fork belfry. The church hosts a tabernacle made by Ceccati and a painting in the background attributed to Annibale Carracci. During the consecration the antique name San Salvatore was changed to Santa Maria. In 1776 new restoration work on the church was done and in 1847 the foundations were consolidated. Further work was done in 1929. The church is directed liturgically and has a sloping façade ending with a triangular frontispiece and central oculus. On the façade there are a few Latin inscriptions. The inside has a single hall with rectangular apse. The bell tower rises on the north side. The trabeation is of Tuscan order with angel heads on the capitals. The barrel arch with groins ceiling is imposed on the trabeation.
