Description
The headwaters of the Secchia river lie in a basin at 1510 m altitude, surrounded by a few of the major peaks of the Reggiano Apennines, amongst which the Alpe di Succisso, Mt Casarola and Mt Alto. Almost reach or exceed 2000 m. A little below the source, the river flows right in to a particularly charming area, next to walls which jut out ("gli Schiocchi"), there after slowing down as it gets nearer Collagna. A bit further down in the valley, the stretch of the so-called "Triassic gypsums" is particularly interesting (see file), an area where you can find abandoned mills. Further down, near Cerredolo, the Secchia starts to define the administrative boundary between the provinces of Reggio Emilia and Modena, definitively entering later on the later province. It is the major waterway of the Reggiano mountains, seeing as for a good part, higher up on the river, it passes right through the heart of the territory.
