Description
The most important monumental property of the Casina territory is the Castle of Sarzano with the annexed hamlet. It was mentioned in an antique deal of sale of Atto Adalberto, ancestor of Countess Matilde's, of 958. The castle was to defend the road, which climbed from Reggio Emilia towards the passes for Tuscany.
The current plan with double enclosure walls, three courts donjon and squared tower, dates back to the XV century, to the times of Marquis Nicolò III d'Este.
A recent restoration is to have the few remaining structures resurface, even though they represent a minimum part of the original ones they have interesting significance.
What is left of the antique structure is the tall tower, used as a bell tower, the imposing donjon with Guelf battlement equipped with piombatoi and covered by a roof and the remains of a wall enclosure.
The big tower constitutes the most interesting feature of the complex.
