Spallanzani Path - 5th stage from Carpineti to Ginepreto

Periods of Activity:
The higher part of the path has difficult stretches in winter, with snow and ice. We advise it be done in summer, for the fresh climate and for the variety and intensity of colors in autumn and spring.

The Spallanzani path, dedicated to the scientist Lazzaro Spallanzani, passes through all the vegetation strips of the Reggiano Apennines (hills, mountains and peaks), from Scandiano up to S. Pellegrino in Alpe, on the Reggiano ridge.
The path, besides being marked by white and red CAI signs also has a butterfly symbol and the initials SSP.
The path does not have particular technical difficulties, it can also be used by inexperienced excursionists and is quite suitable for horse trekking.
The path is 115 km long, is usually traveled in stages an, usually 7, for a total of 35 hours walking time.

Carpineti administrative capital is 37 km from Reggio Emilia
You get there taking the SS 63 up to the intersection for Marola (just out of the ‘Seminario' gallery) and then taking the SP 98 following the directions. You can also get there taking the SP 7 Scandiano, Viano, Baiso (or not far after Viano getting on the SP 98)
Distance from Modena 63 km.
You get there taking the SS 486 of the Radici Pass. At Cerredolo, take the SP 19, and continue until Comlombaia di Secchia: here follow the directions for Carpineti.

Forth stage. Locations crossed: Castello di Carpineti, Ca' Fosola, Campogallinaro, Saccaggio, La Noce, Campolungo, Campo Pianelli, Pietra di Bismantova, Ginepreto. Time needed: 5.30 hrs
Difference in altitude climbing: 960 m
Difference in altitude descending: 760 m Having returned to the Carpineti castle, you pass the ruins and continue along he ancient ridge road now a trail which probably dates back to the Middle Ages. This route used to lead to Cà Fossa under the same-name mount. Here after having traveled a few meters on a gravel road you leave it and turn to head out southwards. After a few changes in direction (be careful) and after a de-forested zone, you reach a meadow with a mountain. Reaching the hamlet of Saccaggio you cross at first a paved road to descend to Rio Spirola from where you climb back up on another paved road. After reaching La Noce you follow the paved road for about a km up to Campolungo. Getting near the Pietra di Bismantova at Campo Pianelli you encounter Route 697 which climbs heading right to the Pietra. Through thick nut orchards and then wide clearings you reach the peak from where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the entire Apennine ridge. To go down you take the easy route that lies on the west, which going around the base of the spectacular vertical wall, leads you to the Benedictine Hermitage. Near the hermitage there's a restaurant-bar visited by tourists and climbers. You continue from the wide underlying parking lot to the lower hair-pin bends from where a carriage-way begins through the fields. After a little stretch you reach the church of Ginepreto.
